Swim Team: F.A.Q.
Do we have to be members of the YMCA to join the team?
- Fall / Winter League: YES! The Kearney Family YMCA Tsunami Swim Team does require membership to our local Y. For more information check our Become A Member page!
- In addition to swim team, this opens the opportunity to using our facility at any time, and joining any of our programs at the member rate. Interested in a family membership? Check out our website at www.kearneyymca.org or call 308-237-9622 to find out more. At the Y, we have something for EVERYONE!
- Summer League: No! Being a member in highly recommend and does receive the member rate for this program but is not required.
What if we cannot afford registration or membership?
If you feel you cannot afford monthly membership or team registration, PLEASE talk with us about our Membership Assistance Program to see if we can help! We want you here!
Does my child have to attend every practice?
Although we strongly encourage swimmers to attend the suggested number of practices for their swimming level, we understand that everyone has very busy lives full of many activities. If you and your swimmer are committed to our team and truly want to succeed, we welcome you to join us and get to as many practices as possible. Your swimmer will not be reprimanded if they do not make all practices, but strong communication to the coaches is appreciated. If we do not feel we see your child enough, we will follow up with you to see how we can help!
What if we currently swim for another team?
If you currently swim for another team, but wish to join the Tsunami Swim Team, please contact the Y coaches. You may join the YMCA league right away as a swimmer for the YMCA Tsunami team, however for USA Swimming your swimmer will have to swim “unattached” from his or her old team for 120 days from their last competition to gain status on the Y team. PLEASE NOTE, you are still fully a part of the YMCA team. You will practice with us, we will coach you at meets, and you will be with us every step of the way, the swimmer just enters meets as unattached until approval is granted to our team from USA Swimming. Please ask us more about how we can help make this happen for you!
Why do we pay for Y and USAS Fees?
We pay and register for both the YMCA and USA Swimming. YMCA registration is required for all levels, while USA Swimming is only required for our Blue group and those wishing to compete in meets outside the YMCA League. USA Swimming allows for our swim team to participate in YMCA Swim Meets across the state and country. Each year the YMCA has their biggest swim meet, the YMCA National Swim Meet.
